MUFFLERS

Your car's exhaust
There's one very obvious way to tell if your exhaust needs repairing. It makes a louder noise. Don't let it reach the point where your neighbours run for cover when you start your car in the morning.

The warning signs of a worn exhaust system are not always so obvious. A worn exhaust system will affect your car's performance so have your car's exhaust system checked regularly by a specialist.

What does a catalytic converter do?
Since 1986, car manufacturers have been required by law to fit all new passenger vehicles with catalytic converters. A catalytic converter transforms harmful exhaust gases into elements which are environmentally friendly. In other words, it takes out the nasties.

These poisonous pollutants are actually converted into harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water by your catalytic converter. So what comes out of your exhaust pipe won't harm mother nature.

Would you like extra power?
If you want to get better performance from your car, the exhaust system is a good place to start. Extractors are an inexpensive way to boost the power of your engine. You'll be surprised at the difference.

At Midas, we carry a range of extractors for many vehicles, and extra power is just one of the advantages they offer. Here are a few more that apply:

  • Increased power for towing.
  • Your engine runs cooler.
  • Improved fuel economy.
  • More torque from your four-wheel drive.

Advantages of a Midas repair
Midas carry a wide range of mufflers to suit most popular makes and models. Midas exhausts keep your car performing at maximum efficiency and prevent dangerous fumes from entering your car. Unlike many others, Midas guarantees all our exhaust parts and workmanship.

BRAKES

Why are your brakes important?
Brakes are the single most important safety factor in your car. One of the easiest ways to tell if they're working is to check your brake warning light. If it's on, they need attention.

That's simple enough. But what about the less obvious warning signs. If you experience any of these warning signs? You should have your brakes checked by a specialist.

  • Your car loses grip when braking.
  • Your car pulls to the left or right when braking.
  • Your brake pedal is low, hard, soft or spongy.
  • Your steering wheel shudders when you brake.
  • Your brakes screech or squeal.
  • Your car takes longer to stop than normal.
  • More about brakes, see our Auto Education Section...

Why choose midas?
Midas carries a wide range of brake replacement parts to suit most popular makes and models. More importantly, the technical expertise of our brake specialist ensures you'll leave with your brakes in top condition. And for total peace of mind, our work is backed by the Midas 12 month 20,000 kilometre, nationwide guarantee.

Why are your disc brake calipers important?
When you apply pressure to your brake pedal, this is what happens: the pressure forces brake fluid to engage a series of mechanisms that push the brake pad onto the disc rotor (which is attached to the wheel assembly), bringing your car to a stop. The brake pad is mounted to a brake caliper, which is the part that applies and releases the brake pads from the disc rotor.

The caliper comprises a housing, inside which is a piston that moves back and forth when you apply and release the brakes. Rubber parts inside the caliper ensure that hydraulic fluid does not leak from it.

Note: 1
If your vehicle's calipers have not been overhauled for some time, your Midas brake specialist may recommend this service when replacing brake pads. He'll always explain the reason why.

Note: 2
Although you do not always need to overhaul calipers in axle sets (pairs), doing so can result in more balanced braking and extended brake pad life. Again, your Midas brake specialist will explain why

What makes machining your disc rotors so important?
A disc rotor is the circular metal plate that your brake pad presses against to stop the car. The smoother the surface of the disc rotor, the more efficient the braking. So when new brake pads are fitted, machining of disc rotors ensures maximum braking efficiency.

After thousands of braking applications disc rotors wear, and usually unevenly. For effective braking, new brake pads should fit flush against the disc rotor. That's why your disc rotors should be machined by a Midas specialist.

SUSPENSION

why is suspension so vital to your car's performance?
One function of your car's suspension is to provide a smooth, comfortable ride even when you're on a bumpy road. However your suspension's most important job is to keep all four tyres in firm contact with the road, so that steering, driving and braking systems are effective.

There are many parts working together to ensure your car's suspension is doing its job. Shock absorbers (or struts) and springs are the main parts, however it's important that other parts, including ball joints, tie rod ends and suspension bushes are in good condition.

If any of these parts are worn your suspension system becomes ineffective. For example, just one worn shock absorber means you may need up to 2.6 metres longer to stop. That could be the difference between stopping safely or crashing.

Here is a list of some of the things that can occur when your shock absorbers or struts are worn. If any of these happen to you, it's time to get them replaced.

  • Car dips forward when braking
  • Tyres show evidence of unusual tread wear
  • Shock absorbers are leaking fluid
  • Car doesn't handle properly around corners

More importantly, the technical expertise of our specialists ensures you'll leave with your car's suspension in top condition. Why does your automatic transmission need a flush?
Automatic gearboxes require transmission fluid to be changed regularly, not only to prolong the life of the gearbox, but also to ensure it performs at its best. This is considered so important that it's often part of maintaining a new car's warranty.

When old transmission fluid is flushed out of the system, transmission coolers, lines and torque converters should be drained to prevent the possibility of sludge remaining.

Here are some of the things that can happen to your transmission if sludgy fluid is not flushed away properly.

  • Poor Fluid Flow
  • Heat Retention
  • Poor Gear Changes
  • Reduced Life

SERVICES AT SELECTED SHOPS

Why is the Midas flush and fill service the best?
At Midas we use the most advanced transmission flushing equipment available. The machine removes most of the dangerous old fluid and Midas disposes of it without harming the environment. Your gearbox is then filled with new transmission fluid that meets or exceeds the standards specified by your car's manufacturer.

Note! The Midas Automatic Transmission Flush cannot repair automatic transmissions that are already damaged
